Montacute Sign Hunting!

Image
Montacute House was always one of those places I had passed when travelling through Yeovil and I never thought it was a place worth visiting (how wrong was I!).  I couldn’t find any evidence of Omega signs there so never thought of investigating the area. Then one day I happened to come across an image on Google when looking for another sign which led me to this site:  https://www.walkingforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=13041.0 Clearly there are signs in the area! So I started to investigate and could estimate where this sign would be and took to google Streetview to try and find any others. The National Trust Land Map which can be found here:  https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/features/follow-the-history-of-our-places-with-land-map   shows the boundary of the land so I scanned the area and after searching Google images I could see there was a couple more signs to be discovered which I could also see on Streetview. Right.. time to head out! We parked in the Mont...

Shute Shelve and Crook Peak Part 2

Sign 1. Sign 2.  These are the two signs on Crook Peak to find. They are about a mile apart as the crow flies (atcf) and the top sign is approx 1 mile atcf from the Cross Plain sign from Part 1. If you have continued from Part 1 then you would have headed west toward Crook Peak from Cross Plain. There are many routes around here and it’s easy to get lost so I will give the coordinates for sign 1 below so just follow your sat nav or use OS Maps to plan the route: NT Sign Crook Peak, 51.289716, -2.864633 When you have found the first sign you need to go around the fields to the west and along the edge of the woods… If you have discovered this cave then you are on the right track! The second sign is by the Webbington Road. There is a very small lay-by here where you can park and do the hunt for these two signs in reverse if you wish!

Shute Shelve and Crook Peak Part 1

Steep hills await on this route! I have split this hike into two parts so you can decide to do either one or both together if you wish.  Starting at the lowest Shute Shelve Omega sign on the A371 then work your way up around the field to the right and you will be going in an anti-clockwise direction to find the other two signs.  Google coordinates for the first Omega sign: (51.2908560, -2.8280500) Watch your dogs as there can be sheep in this field from time to time! Great views at the top! The second sign is on top of the hill. It’s up to you to find it! Head down the track towards the A38 and you should find the 3rd sign. Across the A38 and you shouldn’t have much difficulty finding this bonus one. Head straight up the hill from the car park keeping the boundary wall on your right and you will come across the next sign. That’s 5 signs and a nice walk or run nearly complete. Time to head back to the car or carry on to Crook Peak! Stats above for a walk/hi...
